团圆饭
i look across the restaurant. as I sporadically walk past the tables, i see groups of 10 people each, groups that are seemingly called 'families'.
yet on each table, i see people busy staring into their handphones, with an incredibly bored look on their faces.
we're so contactable, yet so disconnected.
I won't forget what u said at reunion dinner last year. I could've sworn i would've thrown a glass at you, if i hadnt bothered to restrain myself. I can't stand u, u noe that? I've never been able to. Why not you just stay in Shanghai all your life? Then perhaps you won't think the whole world owes you a living.
At my own table, we wait patiently for the rest of the family to come. They're 1 hour late, and we get more impatient by the minute. My bro sniggers in irritation at how anyone can come 1 hour late for an event like reunion dinner (they form 2/3 of the table). Because the restaurant has to prepare to serve another round of customers by 7:30, we chow down our food in 15minutes (10 courses, no less), and pick ourselves up to leave. We barely met for half an hour. We barely spoke more than 10 sentences.
Well. Perhaps this yearly ritual really does help. In subtle ways.
