Wat The Fish
If any of you actually caught the advertisement they have on TV, Ban Heng Restaurant on Boon Keng Road is having an awesome promotion till the end of the month. 1 small-ish Soon Hock is going for $4.80 now. It's actually not bad! Quite fresh, deep fried till crispy and drizzled in soya sauce and garnished with ginger and chilli. In fact, it was so good, our family of 4 plus my grandma (that makes 5) started by ordering 2 fish.
Halfway through our meal, grandma waved to the waitress and casually said '2 more!'. And so came 2 more soon hock. hahaha. we stuffed ourselves silly with fish and ate every part down to sucking the fishhead and ingesting the fishtail. Teochews ma. What to do. We eat fish all the time. In fact, since I was young, I can hardly recall any meal at my grandma's that did not have fish. Most of the time, it was just steamed on its own and we'd pluck e flesh off and dip it in good ol' salted bean sauce (Taucheo) and have it with hot steaming rice.
So all in all, the waitress whom Lide commented on as being too young to be working in a old, boring restaurant like Ban Heng served us FOUR soon hock. It was a fishy evening man. What the fish.
And oh yes. Apparently there exists two restaurants on the same road. 万兴 (which is Ban3 Heng1 in dialect) and 源兴 (which is Buang3 Heng1). Well, when we were eating, this couple walked in and promptly sat down at a table for 10 people. They proceeded to look at the menu for a really long time. It was really strange. After something like 10 phone calls, the woman sheepishly called the waitress over..
'Erm, sorry, our family dinner is erm, at, erm, Buang Heng.'

On the other hand, I went into the place above for the first time today. Woah. High security man. Every dunno-how-far u walk hafta go thru a gate where someone has to open for you. It's almost like jail like that. And the kids wear the same thing.. like in army..except army can book out... here if u try to book out.. it's called 'abscond'.
I feel it's really super stifling for the kids to be in a place like that, and frankly I don't believe there's much change in them when they eventually get discharged. The kids we talked to today were either BPOs (Beyond Parental Control - where e parents actually haul their kids to court) or YSOs (Youth Sexual Offenders). And frankly, one of e kids I talked to did haf a pretty 色 face and he was staring at Jean in a semi-色 kinda way.
Well. I'm not about to get too reflective. 2nd session at Boys' Home tomorrow! :)
