It's that time of the sem again
It's that time of the semester again. Mugging for exams, which is really quite bleargh. But i thank God that there is a kind of joy as I am studying.
I think right, I've hardly ever been this unprepared for exams.
In yr 1, i used to b able to at least do some of e readings twice. and sometimes read outside of e required reading list.
then in yr 2, i would search out e original books on the theory and read the introduction. let's say one of e topics was 'solution-focused therapy'.. so i'd go find the 'Handbook of Solution-Focused Therapy' and read the Introduction. usually, that was enough to cope with exams.
Year 3 sem 2, i found myself just reading e lecture notes n readings. barely survive.
It's year 4 now, reading week. and i realised. i dun haf the readings for one my nightmare modules. Hmm. see the shift? it's prolly just got more intense la. as i was looking for the Olson article on the Circumplex model yesterday, I realised what a different world i am in now. I am actually looking for stuff on my own, learning on my own, in many cases also thinking and reflecting on my own, designing my own learning processes. I must say i enjoy it.
Kaiyin and I were discussing this last night. Like how we realised actually our own growth in Social Work is very gradual. We don't see sudden changes in ourselves overnight, but over the years we see our values change. We are more careful with our words, sharper in our minds when we talk to people, keener in our understanding at looking at families, more aware as we look at policies in the real world.
She was saying her pastor reflected to her 'wow, i can see how your training has helped you.. can really see your groupwork skills being put to use..' and she's like.. 'HUH.. i got use any skill meh?'
I think some things now just come naturally.
Which is perhaps the reason why I am quite joyful in this period of exams. I really see studying for exams as a chance to personal growth, to be more aware of myself and the world i live in. And i feel excited and comforted at the same time when I gain new insights into certain issues.
And also, of course. You're a great source of joy too. :)
