Don't Waste Your Life

Life's a journey - don't forget to unpack.

Where it all meets

Perhaps then, it is at the cross of Christ that we find what we crave for most deeply in this world. Love and sacrifice, justice and mercy, faithfulness and grace. It is at the cross of Christ that all these meet, and if we dig deep enough into the core of our being, we will find that these are the things we will live and die for. - Me

To you, my reader. :)

There, look on me, so that you may not praise me beyond what I am; there, believe me, not others, about myself; there, attend to me and see what I have been in myself, through myself. - St Augustine

Family Breakfasts

Many people enjoy 'family dinners'. And while my family has our fair share of that, somehow I much prefer 'family breakfasts'. Family breakfasts are much rarer for the Tays, and hardly ever takes place. But somehow I enjoy family breakfasts a lot more than dinners.

I remember when I was young, we used to watch 教育电视,these MOE-produced TV programmes that supposedly espoused the right values. (Somehow, when the kids in the programme played at the neighbourhood playground, there was always XiaoMing, Ali, Bala and Peter... i think)

In those shows, the family always went out together on weekends for breakfast at the hawker centre. I grew to love it when MY family did the same and we'd go out for breakfast too. Just too bad that my parents seem to love bread and buns for breakfast, and they don't really like going out that early in the morning. But whenever we do, it still gives me the warm-fuzzy-we're-a-happy-family kinda feeling, almost like i'm a kid again. Except now I'll order fishball mee with chilli. We used to go out a lot more for family breakfasts back in the early half of the 90's, up till the point when I was in Sec 2 or 3. But since then, my family have become Christians, and Sunday mornings are a lot more packed now.

Which is why I kinda enjoyed the past couple of days that my dad was on leave trying to settle the renovations for the new house. We went out for family breakfast 2 out of those 3 days, and even though we didn't really see each other for the rest of the day as we were busy with our own things, it still made me appreciate my family more. The coffee is somehow sweeter when mom queued 10mins to buy it for you. Just like how my dad always seemed to totally enjoy the coffee I would make for him in the evenings.

I like family breakfasts. Being at the hawker centre in the morning seems to connect me back into the real world again. Especially the aunties scurrying around the market for the freshest meat and vegetables. I don't always like expensive food. A good beef horfun is always better than pan fried foie gras. Beehoon with the family is always nicer than codfish eaten alone.
