Here I am. Finally.
Dang. I never really expected to be in such a position. Abject poverty is everywhere. It's so IN YOUR FACE. I cant believe it almost. Kids begging on the street, men sleeping everywhere.
Every traffic light u stop at, there are children who turn up beside your window. They knock and ask for money. Most of them are painfully thin and undernourished. There's a curious lack of fat people in this place.
We went to the diarrhoea research institute today. It's so sad, because kids here die mostly from plain old simple diarrhoea. Most of us take diarrhoea as just plain shit, but here diarrhoea is as deadly as a heart attack. Most kids die within 2 hours of getting diarrhoea.
It's painful. I see the women lying in the hosptial beds with their children, some of who are whining in pain, others just plain trying to sleep. Thankfully, most of them in the hospital survive. Many outside the walls of the hospital don't.
So heart breaking. My heart wrenched today.
And we havent even started the real work yet.
Unless our hearts break, we cannot love those we serve.
